Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild Offers Recovery With Drivers—and a Full Wipe

Original article image from TechPowerUp

Windows 11’s Cloud Rebuild recovery option can reinstall the operating system and retrieve a PC’s drivers from Windows Update, including when Windows will no longer start. TechPowerUp reports that the feature is arriving gradually through KB5127936, the optional preview update released October 28 for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2.

For PC owners, the key distinction is what the recovery process downloads. The existing cloud download option in Reset this PC retrieves Windows; Cloud Rebuild also fetches drivers and, according to Microsoft as cited in the report, does not require an intact installed copy of the operating system.

A recovery route with a substantial trade-off

When Windows remains accessible, the feature appears as “Rebuild PC” under Settings, System, Recovery. If startup fails repeatedly, users can instead reach Cloud rebuild through the Troubleshoot menu in the Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE.

The process reformats the system drive, removing applications, settings, user accounts and local files. Data already synced to services such as OneDrive remains available through those services. A sanitize option also lets users securely erase the drive before handing a PC to someone else.

Network access and driver availability matter

Cloud Rebuild still depends on a working WinRE environment and an internet connection from within it. Ethernet or Wi-Fi access requires a network driver supplied by the PC manufacturer. The preview update also allows WinRE to reuse Wi-Fi profiles saved in Windows.

According to the report, Microsoft says rebuilding fails when the device’s drivers are unavailable on Windows Update. That makes Cloud Rebuild a potentially useful recovery route for a troubled PC, but one whose prerequisites—and complete removal of local data—deserve attention before use.
