Xbox Nano reportedly tests a direct Wi-Fi link to Xbox Cloud Gaming

nanowifi

Microsoft’s Xbox Nano controller could offer another way to connect to Xbox Cloud Gaming: a direct Wi-Fi connection to the service’s servers. According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, that capability is being privately tested, although Microsoft has not officially announced it.

Warren’s November 3 report says the compact controller is scheduled to launch on November 4. The reported cloud connection feature has a less definite timetable: Warren expects a preview announcement soon, but does not provide a confirmed release date.

A separate pairing step for cloud play

The reported setup would use the Xbox mobile app to pair the Nano over Wi-Fi with Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming servers. Warren says testing is taking place through the new Xbox Cloud Gaming website.

The purpose is to reduce latency by letting the controller communicate directly with the cloud service. Warren compares the approach to Google’s former Stadia controllers. His report includes no measured latency improvement, so the size of any practical benefit remains unestablished.

For cloud players, the distinction matters because a controller’s launch and support for this connection method are separate milestones. The report does not establish that buyers will have access to the feature when the Nano arrives.

Wider support remains uncertain

Warren anticipates a preview before broader support across web browsers and smart TVs. He also expects the upcoming Xbox Elite 3 to offer similar functionality; that is his expectation, rather than an announced specification.

The report describes an earlier Microsoft plan to include direct cloud connectivity in a controller codenamed Sebile, associated with a canceled Xbox Series X refresh. That history provides background, but does not confirm a rollout schedule for the Nano’s reported feature.
