RTX 2080 Ti Memory Mod Highlights VRAM Limits in Demanding PC Games

A modified NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22 GB of memory delivered substantial gains in selected demanding games, according to PC Games Hardware testing covered by TechPowerUp on November 1, 2026. The results illustrate how memory capacity can constrain an older gaming GPU, though the test selection limits broader conclusions.

Where the extra memory helped

In Flight Simulator 2024, the modified card averaged 52.5 FPS against 30.2 FPS for the standard 11 GB version at 4K using DLSS Performance and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation. Spider-Man 2 rose from 39.4 to 64.0 FPS, while Indiana Jones and the Great Circle crashed to the desktop on the 11 GB card.

The differences narrowed at 1440p with DLSS Quality. Even there, the standard card remained about 20% slower in Flight Simulator 2024 and Spider-Man 2, according to the report.

These figures come from one outlet’s testing of nine deliberately memory-heavy games. TechPowerUp notes that most titles run adequately with 11 GB, so the results should not be treated as a general performance uplift across PC gaming.

A hardware modification with caveats

The conversion replaces all eleven memory chips with 2 GB Samsung components. Moving a strap resistor allows the GPU to recognise the increased capacity without firmware changes, and regular NVIDIA drivers support the modified configuration.

For comparison, PC Games Hardware set both cards to matching 1.9 GHz GPU clocks, 15 GT/s memory speeds and 280 W power limits. The modified card’s blower cooler and original 250 W limit had constrained it.

The practical takeaway is that additional VRAM can help when capacity becomes a bottleneck. Reliability remains a separate concern: PC Games Hardware warned about the age of the hardware and soldering work that could fail later, recommending scrutiny of seller reputation and warranty coverage.
