Keurig’s Alta brewer combines plastic-free coffee rounds with touchscreen drink selection and guided milk preparation, according to WIRED’s review published October 31, 2026. The review describes a machine that brings espresso brewing and adjustable milk frothing into one countertop appliance.
Drink controls extend to the milk
The touchscreen suggests drinks based on the AltaRound being used. Options described by WIRED include flat whites, lattes, cappuccinos, cortados and Americanos, with controls for drink size, temperature and strength. Users can also save favorite drinks for quicker access.
For milk-based drinks, the built-in steam wand works with a dedicated vessel and magnetic whisk. The brewer provides step-by-step instructions, including how much milk to add, and adjusts for dairy, oat, almond or soy milk. Users can change the foam’s texture or prepare cold foam and cold froth.
The wand also supports manual operation. After milk preparation, it purges into a separate drip tray; WIRED describes wiping the wand and rinsing the vessel as the remaining cleanup steps.
Coffee rounds change the waste equation
According to the review, spent AltaRounds collect in a waste bin and can go into home compost or household garbage. Their packaging is currently foil-based. Paper-based packaging intended for curbside recycling is described as a future change, rather than something already shipping.
WIRED reports that the Alta uses up to 10 bars of pressure to brew espresso. Reviewer Louryn Strampe praised the coffee’s flavor and texture, as well as the milk results. Those assessments reflect WIRED’s testing.
For home technology buyers, the combination makes drink customization and routine cleanup central to the Alta’s appeal. The packaging transition remains a separate development to watch.
