Resident Evil’s Digital Release Brings Cregger’s Adaptation Home

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is now available to rent or buy digitally through services including Prime Video, according to IGN’s November 3 report. The home release arrives just over 45 days after the Capcom game adaptation opened in theaters.

IGN lists the digital purchase price at $24.99 and reports that the film has crossed $400 million at the worldwide box office. DVD, Blu-ray and 4K editions are also available for preorder, although the report provides no DVD release date.

A different route into Resident Evil

For players deciding whether to watch, Cregger’s approach to the material is a central distinction. According to IGN, the filmmaker sought to recreate the experience and atmosphere of playing Resident Evil, rather than adapt a particular game’s story.

That approach drew scrutiny from fans who wanted familiar characters such as Leon Kennedy. IGN reports that Cregger expressed frustration with discussion focused on the film’s relationship to the games, while standing by his creative direction.

The digital release gives viewers another way to assess that interpretation themselves. Its relevance for gaming audiences lies in how it translates the series’ horror identity into a film with its own narrative approach.

Interest extends to the games

IGN also reports that sales of Resident Evil 2 remake on PS5 rose by more than 50% during the week the film reached theaters. That figure concerns one game and platform; it does not establish a franchise-wide sales increase.

As for further films, Cregger’s involvement remains uncertain. IGN says he previously described this adaptation as the end of his participation in the franchise, but has since indicated openness to contributing to sequels. That leaves room for future involvement without confirming a specific role.
