Existing Nexus Mods uploads face a January 2, 2027 deadline to comply with the platform’s AI disclosure requirements, according to GamesRadar’s November 3 report. The policy will also require declarations for new uploads and give users a way to exclude AI-generated content from searches.
For the modding community, the change puts disclosure at the centre of how AI-assisted work is shared. Nexus Mods will continue accepting mods made with AI, while asking authors to explain its role publicly.
What authors will need to disclose
GamesRadar reports that authors will have to state whether AI was used and explain where and how it contributed. An example of the upload interface suggests separate declarations for work that is primarily AI-generated, work assisted by AI, and AI-generated promotional material.
Nexus Mods co-owner Foledinho argues that AI’s uses span tasks from script completion to creating textures, voices and complete assets. In his explanation, a blanket prohibition would discourage authors from acknowledging those uses, making transparent rules preferable.
Enforcement follows the grace period
The announced 60-day transition for existing mods runs from November 3 through January 2, 2027. Afterward, Nexus Mods says it will begin direct enforcement, notifying authors about missing disclosures or permission settings and asking them to correct them.
Repeated noncompliance could lead moderators to restrict an account or remove its user from the platform. Foledinho also acknowledges that the requirements will not persuade every author to disclose AI use.
For players browsing mods, the practical distinction is greater control over discovery: the planned filters will let them exclude AI-generated content. Their usefulness will still depend in part on authors accurately describing their work.
